چکیده

The aim of our work is to provide maxillofacial surgeons with an integrated osteotomy planning system for complex bone relocations, facilitating a preoperative assessment of functional as well as æsthetic rehabilitation. On this account we try to establish a robust modeling approach based on a histomechanical soft tissue model that reliably predicts the postoperative facial appearance. For two patients with distinct midfacial hypoplasia a maxillary advancement has been exactly reproduced from postoperative CT data, and applied to a 3D planning model derived from preoperative CT data. The resulting tissue deformations have been computed with a finite element approximation on a tetrahedral discretization of the patients’ soft tissue. Isotropic, homogeneous as well as inhomogeneuos tissue models are investigated. The simulation results are quantitatively compared to the true postoperative outcome.

Soft Tissue Prediction in Computer Assisted Maxillofacial Surgery Planning A Quantitative Evaluation of Histomechanical Modeling using Pre- and Postoperative CT-Data

The aim of our work is to provide maxillofacial surgeons with a computer assisted 3D planning environment for complex bone relocations, facilitating a preoperative assessment of functional as well as esthetic rehabilitation. On this account we are developing an interactive simulation and visualization system and try to establish a robust modeling framework based on a biomechanical soft tissue m...

PC-based Virtual Reality Surgical Simulation for Orthognathic Surgery

Complex maxillofacial deformations continue to present challenges in analysis, planning and correction beyond modern technology. The purpose of this paper is to present a virtual reality environment for surgeons to perform virtual orthognathic surgical planning in three dimensions. A surgical planning system, “PC-based virtual reality surgical simulation for orthognathic surgery” (VRSSOS), cons...

Review of Nasal Soft Tissue alterations in Class III Malocclusion patients following Lefort I Osteotomy

Abstract Background and Aim:  The primary aim of orthognathic surgery is to improve the aesthetic parameters of the face and dentition and to transform it into an acceptable clinical standard, which is often associated with the secondary aim of improving occlusal function. The most common treatment option for maxillofacial abnormalities in Class III malocclusion patients is bimaxillary surgery,...

On constitutive modeling of soft tissue for the long-term prediction of cranio-maxillofacial surgery outcome

In this paper, we discuss physically based approaches to the modeling of deformable soft tissue for the long-term prediction of patient’s postoperative appearance in cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) surgery simulations. Since the biomechanical properties of living tissues and their numerical modeling are, in general, very complex, our focus is on the investigation of qualitative and quantitative diff...

Digital three-dimensional image fusion processes for planning and evaluating orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. A systematic review.

The three important tissue groups in orthognathic surgery (facial soft tissues, facial skeleton and dentition) can be referred to as a triad. This triad plays a decisive role in planning orthognathic surgery. Technological developments have led to the development of different three-dimensional (3D) technologies such as multiplanar CT and MRI scanning, 3D photography modalities and surface scann...
